Dance for me, is a blissful way of expressing my creativity which can elevate me and my audience to a state of spiritual ecstasy. Its in and dance with all purity that I find my soul soaring high into the unknown and the sublime realms of creativity and happiness.

Dance has been a passion for me from my childhood. The opening of Upasana Kalakendra, my dance school is a dream come true for me.

There are some good classical dance teachers in the Houston area and I am extremely happy to see them pass on these beautiful ancient dance forms to the younger generation. At the same time, it is also painful to see people wanting to learn bits and pieces of these art forms just for performing in various dance/ cultural/ social events. Often the dance schools also get sucked up into this commotion and start deviating from their original goals. This is clearly visible in the quality of programs in the USA. Most of the time only immediate family members of the performers end up watching these programs. The purpose seems to be mostly limited to capturing some video clips and photos to be posted on YouTube and other online social networks. Indians who have moved from various parts of the world to the US often comment about the sub-standard quality of programs in most of our cultural/ social events here.

My aim through ‘Upasana Kalakendra’ is to impart knowledge and train a limited number of serious students interested in indian classical dance forms like Bharathanatyam and Mohiniyattam. The classes will be structured to impart both theoretical and practical aspects of the dance forms. The classes will ensure that the students develop a passion for learning and performing these subtle and classic art forms in all their purity. Through the school the students will mostly be performing classical dance items. However, we will also experiment with traditional folk and Semi-classical items from time to time. I will ensure that all programs we perform will be of the highest quality.
